From On Patrol #76: Too Much Face
November 3rd, 2014
I vividly remember the origin of this bit. Every Thursday the local theater charged five dollars for a movie and a popcorn, so we’d go to a late showing at this practically abandoned multiplex – usually Morgan Ann, Mitchell Greenberg, and me. One night Morgan Ann and I were walking back to campus and we started trading these horrible Bob Dylan impressions. At this point I was drawing a lot of the show’s material from something that happened in the week: either a singular funny joke that I wrote around or something that inspired me. Although I had a general arc for the term laid out beforehand, in many cases the written material would reflect something quite current that was still making us laugh as we were performing it. So after we did those impressions I knew I had to write it for Morgan. Part of the humor is how little I know about Bob Dylan – my impression usually involves him singing about dogs and dads, and that’s the extent of it. The only research I did was looking at Dylan’s Wikipedia page, which listed all these stupid aliases he has; you can hear Morgan start to lose it when she has to list them off. Much like Mickey Rooney, I have no idea what Dylan actually sounds like, but I like to assume Morgan Ann’s impression is pretty spot on – and that he’d say the word “genitals” with that exact inflection.
